About David E. Walker
Born October 3, 1915 in Maine, David E. Walker led a full life.
After attending university in Washington, DC, Walker went through training at the FBI Academy. From there, he was assigned to the Detroit Michigan area, then on to Philadelphia.
In addition to working, he became a Scoutmaster. Some of his honors included receiving the Scoutmaster Key and being inducted into the Virgil Honor Order of the Arrow (an honor camping society).
Upon retiring in 1966, he and his wife traveled from Mexico to Alaska, briefly resting in the Pocono Mountains before journeying to Floral City, FL in April of 1979.
In Florida, the avid birder found his place in environmental work. By 1988, Walker became president of the Citrus County Audubon Society (incorporated in 1971). He twice earned recognition as Outstanding Chapter President in Florida.
From 1991 to 1995, David Walker wrote for several Florida newspapers. His column "On the Wing" was a part of the Ocala Star Banner and covered information about native birds. Also during this time, local newspapers published Walker's concerns about the environment. Copies of some of his articles are available on CF Databases and in this libguide.
In his final years, David Walker donated many personal books and items to the College of Central Florida Citrus Campus Library (then Central Florida Community College). This foundation of donations became the current collection, an ever-growing area where items about the environment are available. People may browse the shelves, borrow books, and view the various plaques awarded to David E. Walker for his services.
David Walker's portrait and awards are placed in honor next to his collection. Close by, windows overlook the campus grounds. We invite visitors to sit near any window, bird watch, and appreciate a small portion of the wildlife David Walker spoke for.
