The fair use doctrine in copyright law allows for certain uses of copyright-protected content without permission from the copyright holder. Due to its flexible and adaptable nature, fair use is very important for teaching and learning communities and is best positioned to support educators and students.

First celebrated by the Harvard Library Office for Scholarly Communication in 2014, Fair Use Week is now enjoyed nationally, sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).
