What is Library Instruction?

Library Instruction workshops are information sessions hosted by librarians. During a session, information about CF library services and resources is provided to CF students, faculty, staff, and others. Topics may include information about the material available at our onsite library, our virtual component, and how to access the material. Many more resources are available.

The sessions are usually for an entire class, allowing many students to learn about what the library offers and ways students, faculty, etc. benefit from using the library.

People learn how to navigate the library's online catalog and databases, request items from this library and others, etc.

Information can be added to the session, such as needs related to your specific class, subject, and assignments. We also discuss MLA and APA citation styles.

How long is a library instruction session?

Typically, we have three time frames for library instruction.

Sample time frames:

  • 10-minute demo format: basic "About the Library" information
  • 15 – 30 minute: Introduction to library services and resources
  • 45 – 60 minute: In-depth session covering majority of what library offers

If needed, you may schedule a 10 minute demo first, and then a longer session later in the term.

In the two longer session formats, library staff have the opportunity to show your students library material and search terms that are paired with your course subject(s), resources related to specific assignments, and an optional library tour.

I am unable to attend the session, but my students can. Is that an issue?

We understand things happen that can cause a person to miss an instruction session, and have a plan for it.

When an instructor cannot attend a session, we ask that the instructor:

  • contact library staff via phone (352-249-1205) or email (citruslb@cf.edu) to advise them the instructor cannot attend
  • provide an attendance sheet students can use to sign in. The sheet can be given or emailed to library staff sometime prior to the session. For ease of communication, please email any information to citruslb@cf.edu .
