Celebrations and Remembrances: National Pet Rock Day

About Pet Rock Day

Happy National Pet Rock Day

The first Sunday in September celebrates the Pet Rock! This pet trend went viral in 1975 and has made a comeback.

This trend and many others highlight the ability to sell ordinary objects using business knowledge, marketing skills, and creativity. Similar trends include chia pets, glow sticks, mood rings, spinning tops, fidget toys, the magic 8 ball, and stress balls.

The pet rock was invented by Gary Dahl, who had a great sense of humor and imagination in addition to business and marketing knowledge. He jokingly marketed small rocks as an actual, extremely low-maintenance pet.

The pet rock was marketed as:

  • Great for the busy person on the go!
  • Perfect for people who want a small, easy to care for pet!

Each rock was packaged in a small box designed for the little pet's imaginary comfort. The box had air holes, was filled with straw to cushion the rock during travel, and came with a care and training manual written by Dahl. This manual is still considered very important (and amusing) by owners, because it was written as if it would help people to understand their new pet rock's needs.

People enjoyed buying the pet rocks as joke gifts for their friends and for themselves. It was a mindset of "So unbelievable, I have to buy one!".

At the library, we celebrate National Pet Rock Day and innovative inventions. Celebrations include various onsite and virtual activities.

From mid-August to early September, students, faculty, and staff may vote for a favorite pet rock, enjoy in-person scavenger hunts, and more! All virtual events are on this page.

Gary Dahl has since passed away but his legacy is set in stone, thanks to the pet rock.

"Feral" Rocks around campus

CF is host to several feral rock colonies. These colonies are beneficial to the local environment. They provide shelter, lookout spots, and resting areas for small wildlife.

This photo features a moment when smaller rocks clustered around and underneath the larger one for protection against the elements. It's possible that the larger rock provides this protection in exchange for companionship.

Update: The large rock has been named Boulder by staff!

2023 Most Rockin’ Mascot cancelled!

Stunning news out of Florida as the 2023 Most Rockin’ Mascot event has been cancelled!

All of the contestants were reported lost at sea after an August hurricane sank the ship they were travelling on. A school of feisty fish fans found the lost rocks after a month of searching. The rocks are reported to be in good health and already looking forward to next year’s Most Rockin’ Mascot event.
