CF Library materials are organized by the Library of Congress Classification shelving system. This system is organized by topics or subjects. The Library of Congress system is often used by academic libraries at colleges and universities.
A basic example of the system and its broadest subjects is listed below. Each subject is assigned a letter. Each item is assigned additional letters and numbers. Find out more on the Call Number tab.
Call Numbers in a library are used to identify where an item may be located on the shelves or online. Every item on library shelves has a call number label. These labels (or, Call Numbers) show people where an item can be found. Call number labels are typically located on an item's spine or front cover (if item is thin).
Call numbers are read from top to bottom, with the most general information on top. Each line of a call number becomes more specific the further down the person reads. When all the lines in a Call Number are combined, it gives a person an idea of where the item is located.
Real-world comparison:
"The College of Central Florida Citrus Campus is at 3800 S Lecanto Highway. Its Library is in building 2, room 202."
These sentences tell us about the location for a CF Library. Each sentence gives us more information, from general to specific. If this information was a Call Number, it might be formatted like the following:
Line 1 | CF | College of Central Florida, Citrus Campus |
Line 2 | 3800 | 3800 S Lecanto Highway |
Line 3 | C2 | The Library is in building 2 |
Line 4 | 202 | Room 202 |
