Library of Congress Classification System (about)

Current CF student, faculty, and staff have options when locating library materials. You may:

  • use the electronic library catalog to search for and request items
  • browse and explore library shelves
  • ask library staff for help

When browsing the shelves or electronic catalog, items may be found using the campus, collection name, and call number. A call number is located on the spine of an item.

CF Library materials are organized by the Library of Congress shelving system. This system is organized by topics or subjects. The Library of Congress system is often used by academic libraries at colleges and universities.

A basic example of the system and its broadest subjects is listed below. Each subject is assigned a letter. Each item is assigned additional letters and numbers. Find out more on the Call Number tab.

Call Numbers in a library are used to identify where an item may be located. A call number can be compared to a person's address. individual labels on items. These labels (or, Call Numbers) show people where an item can be found. Call numbers are typically located on an item's spine or front cover (if item is thin).

Tip: Read a call number one line at a time.
